We just returned from an independent tour of China that included a Yangtze cruise from Chonngqing to Yichang. We were on the President 4 rnThe boat was really good - certainly not the prettiest on the river but the rooms were comfortable, the food good, staff wonderful and excursions excellent. We booked a standard and upgraded to a deluxe - I think they try to upgrade everyone as long as there is room. We barained an adidtional $100 to cover the cost of upgrade so it was very reasonable. The deluxe has indidivually controlled AC and a fridge/mini bar that can be used for personal items. The balconies on all the rooms are small - basically with room for 2 folding chairs but adequate and the boat has both indoor and outdoor observation decks.rnrnI was hesitant about taking the cruise becuase I had read many negative comments on various sites about the pollution, effect of the dam project, etc. but it was a priority for my husband. As it turned out, I am really glad we went. Yes the river is polluted and the scenery changed becuase of the construciton but having nothing else to compare it to, it was pretty awesome as it is now. We were fortunate to have a clear day when we went through the gorges but light fog and rain and some air polution the other days - especially when we toured the dam. rnrnIf you do go, regardless of boat, if you plan to fly out of Yichang after the cruise you should be aware that the airport is about an hour fromt the boat dock so planning time
accordingly is important.!
